Understanding Head & Neck Cancer

Head and neck cancers encompass several subtypes depending on where they originate. Early detection and accurate staging are essential for effective treatment planning.

Oral cavity — lips, tongue, gums, inner lining of the cheeks

Pharynx (throat) — nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx

Larynx (voice box)

Nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses

Salivary glands

Most are squamous cell carcinomas (over 90%)

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms vary by location and are often subtle in early stages. Persistent symptoms should prompt medical evaluation:

A sore in the mouth or on the lip that does not heal

Persistent sore throat or difficulty swallowing

Hoarseness or voice changes lasting more than two weeks

A lump or swelling in the neck

Difficulty breathing or chronic nasal congestion

Ear pain or ringing that does not resolve

Unexplained weight loss

White or red patches in the mouth

Diagnosis and Staging

Diagnosis involves a thorough examination, imaging, and biopsy. Our oncology team reviews all prior records to plan treatment.

Physical and endoscopic examination by an ENT specialist

Biopsy of the suspicious lesion

CT, MRI, or PET-CT imaging for staging

Molecular and HPV testing where relevant

Stage I–IV classification based on tumor size, lymph node involvement, and metastasis
