Stroke Rehabilitation — Treatment in Cuba

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. It is a medical emergency that can cause lasting brain damage, disability, or death. Rehabilitation is a critical part of stroke recovery, helping patients regain lost abilities and improve quality of life. At La Pradera International Health Center in Havana, Cuba, we offer comprehensive stroke rehabilitation programs combining physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and innovative neuroprotective approaches including NeuralCIM®.

Types of Stroke

Understanding the type of stroke helps determine the most effective rehabilitation approach.

Ischemic stroke — caused by a blood clot blocking a brain artery (most common, ~87%)

Hemorrhagic stroke — caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) — temporary blockage, 'mini stroke' warning sign

Effects of Stroke

The effects of stroke depend on which part of the brain was affected and how much damage occurred. Common effects include:

Paralysis or weakness on one side of the body (hemiparesis/hemiplegia)

Difficulty speaking or understanding speech (aphasia)

Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

Memory loss and cognitive impairment

Loss of balance and coordination

Vision problems

Emotional changes and depression

Phases of Stroke Recovery

Stroke recovery is a journey that occurs in phases. Rehabilitation should begin as early as possible and continue as long as improvements are being made.

Acute phase — first few days; medical stabilization in hospital

Subacute phase — weeks 1–12; intensive rehabilitation

Chronic phase — months to years; ongoing therapy and adaptation

Each phase has different rehabilitation goals and intensity
