Melanoma — Treatment in Cuba

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, developing in the melanocytes (pigment-producing cells). While it is less common than other skin cancers, it is more dangerous if not detected early. At La Pradera International Health Center in Havana, Cuba, our integrative oncology team provides comprehensive treatment programs for international patients with melanoma.

Understanding Melanoma

Melanoma develops when melanocytes grow uncontrollably. It can occur anywhere on the skin and, less commonly, in other pigmented tissues.

Superficial spreading melanoma is the most common type

Nodular melanoma grows more quickly into the skin

Lentigo maligna melanoma occurs in sun-damaged skin

Acral lentiginous melanoma occurs on palms, soles, and under nails

Warning Signs (ABCDE Rule)

The ABCDE rule helps identify suspicious moles that should be evaluated:

A — Asymmetry: one half doesn't match the other

B — Border: irregular, notched, or scalloped edges

C — Color: varied colors or uneven distribution

D — Diameter: larger than 6mm (pencil eraser)

E — Evolving: changes in size, shape, color, or symptoms

Diagnosis and Staging

Diagnosis involves biopsy and staging to determine the extent of the disease.

Skin biopsy of suspicious lesion

Sentinel lymph node biopsy for staging

CT or PET scans to check for spread

Breslow thickness measurement

Mitotic rate assessment
