Lung Cancer — Trattamento a Cuba

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Cuba has developed CIMAvax-EGF®, a groundbreaking therapeutic immunotherapy vaccine that targets epidermal growth factor (EGF) — a protein that lung cancer cells need to grow. At La Pradera International Health Center in Havana, Cuba, our integrative oncology program offers international patients access to CIMAvax-EGF® therapy alongside comprehensive supportive care.

Understanding Lung Cancer

Lung cancer begins in the lungs and is broadly classified into two main types. Understanding the type and stage is essential for determining the appropriate treatment approach.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — accounts for about 85% of cases

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) — more aggressive, spreads quickly

Adenocarcinoma — most common NSCLC subtype

Squamous cell carcinoma — arises in the airways

Large cell carcinoma — less common, grows rapidly

Signs and Symptoms

Lung cancer symptoms often do not appear until the disease is advanced. Early detection significantly improves outcomes:

Persistent cough that worsens over time

Coughing up blood or rust-colored sputum

Chest pain that worsens with breathing or coughing

Shortness of breath or wheezing

Hoarseness or voice changes

Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite

Fatigue and weakness

Frequent respiratory infections

Diagnosis and Staging

Diagnosis involves imaging, biopsy, and molecular testing to determine the stage and guide treatment.

Chest X-ray and CT scan

Biopsy of lung tissue for definitive diagnosis

Molecular and genetic testing (EGFR, ALK, KRAS)

PET-CT scan for staging and metastasis detection

Stage I–IV classification based on tumor size, lymph node involvement, and spread

CIMAvax-EGF®: Cuban Immunotherapy Innovation

CIMAvax-EGF® is a therapeutic cancer vaccine developed by the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Havana, Cuba. It is designed to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against epidermal growth factor (EGF), a protein that non-small cell lung cancer cells need to grow. More than 5,000 patients worldwide have been treated with CIMAvax-EGF®, with studies indicating prolonged tumor stabilization and improved survival and quality of life.

Therapeutic vaccine targeting the EGF protein
