Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. It develops in the cells of the breast, typically in the ducts or lobules. At La Pradera International Health Center in Havana, Cuba, our integrative oncology program supports breast cancer patients with Cuban immunotherapy innovations, complementary treatments, and comprehensive supportive care designed to improve quality of life and support the immune system.
Breast cancer is classified by where it begins and whether it has spread. Understanding the type helps determine the most appropriate treatment approach.
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — non-invasive, confined to milk ducts
Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) — most common type, begins in ducts and spreads
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) — begins in milk-producing lobules
Triple-negative breast cancer — lacks estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors
HER2-positive breast cancer — tests positive for HER2 protein
Hormone receptor-positive — fueled by estrogen or progesterone
Early breast cancer often has no symptoms, which is why regular screening is critical. When symptoms do appear, they may include:
A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
Change in breast size, shape, or contour
Skin changes on the breast (dimpling, redness, scaling)
Nipple changes (inversion, discharge, rash)
Breast or nipple pain
Swelling of part or all of the breast
Accurate diagnosis and staging are essential for treatment planning. Our oncology team reviews all prior pathology, imaging, and lab results.
Mammogram and breast ultrasound review
Biopsy and pathology report review
Hormone receptor and HER2 status testing
CT and bone scans for staging
Blood tests including tumor markers (CA 15-3, CA 27.29)
Stage 0–IV classification (TNM system)
